A company can only be as great as the people that comprise it. The true essence of an organization's success often lies in the passion and initiative of its employees.

At Sharethrough, we understand that every employee has different career goals and interests, and we believe in creating an environment that not only recognizes these individual aspirations but also actively supports their constantly evolving career choices and interests. In a recent Apollo Technical study, it was estimated that most people have an average of 12 jobs throughout their lifetime.  In this collection of Sharethrough success stories, we explore how employees have excelled in their roles, explored new professional career paths, and harnessed their creativity and dedication to make a long-lasting impact at Sharethrough.

Finding Success At Sharethrough Across Both Sides Of The Business

JB Martinez, Product Manager at Sharethrough

An ad exchange, such as Sharethrough, consists of two vital types of customers, with publishers on one side, and brands and agencies on the other. Typically, employees will embark on a journey and grow within one side of the business. Very rarely do we see those who accomplish great feats and grow across both! According to a recent article in Better Up, switching career paths can allow employees to feel reinvigorated at work as they bring a new fresh perspective and a learner's mind to the new role. 

A Product Manager’s Success Story

When JB Martinez first joined Sharethrough as a Campaign Operations Manager in the early months of 2019 he came aboard with experience in the world of ad tech having worked at Sizmek and Innovid. It didn’t take long for JB to catch his stride and flourish at Sharethrough, as he soon was trusted to spread his wings and take on a new role as a Publisher Account Manager on the Publisher Support Team. We asked JB how Sharethrough helped him through this role transition: “Initially, it was through a buddy system and then expanded into juggling specific project related tasks and opportunities. When struggling and facing any difficulties, do not be afraid to reach out for help. In doing so, you'll learn from those obstacles and it will cultivate you into becoming a subject matter expert.”

After a few years of dedication and hardwork on the demand side of the business, JB was promoted to Product Manager, helping to grow Sharethrough’s inventory. Since the career change, JB has found the trust that his team instills in him to be an incredibly powerful resource. “As the Product Manager on the Inventory Growth team, I am able to fully leverage my experience from my time on the demand side to supply side operations and provide customer insight with first hand experience. What truly humbles me is the trust my team places in me. Launching impactful publisher products that live up to this standard is a shared achievement I take to heart.”

JB is excited to continue growing his career at Sharethrough. About his new role, he says: “I love being on the publisher side of the exchange group! I'm excited to continue our growth for the various integrations we have at Sharethrough, but I also would love to continue honing my skill sets for design by creating those high impact and design-led publisher products.”

Following Your Passion: Bridging Graphic Design With Product

Karine Bourgault, Product Designer

Switching career paths can often seem like a scary time in our lives, with the unknowns of what to expect, the pressure to outperform, and the potential for imposter syndrome to arise. The reality is, this change in roles can often lead to self exploration, a boost in creativity, and newfound motivation.

Karine Bourgault, Product Designer, worked in a variety of sales roles throughout her days as a college student leading up to joining Sharethrough. In 2018, Karine jumpstarted her post-graduate professional career as a Graphic Designer, instantly becoming a core piece of Sharethrough’s marketing team. Throughout the next three years, Karine grew creatively and professionally. 

A Product Designer’s Success Story

Karine eventually became captivated by the product side of the business: “Working in the marketing team was a blast – I got to tackle all sorts of projects, including some revolving around web design. It took me back to my college days when I wished I'd taken more web design & coding courses. As I dove into it, I realized there's a whole world of opportunities in this field, like user research, design systems, product advocacy, and a bunch more. It just felt like the perfect fit for me.” 

Eventually, Karine reached out to her managers to explore potential opportunities to get involved in product. She explains: “Sharethrough offered me a trial period of 8 weeks with the product team, while still maintaining my role and responsibilities on the marketing team. I got to test-drive my new product role and the product team got to see what I had to offer. Eventually, I was offered the full-time role as well as an external mentor to support and guide me through the career change”.

Karine’s career change felt nothing less than spectacular: “I quickly felt at home with my new responsibilities and team. It was a learning curve for sure, but there's nothing quite like the satisfaction of discovering a career path that brings you genuine happiness.”

Career-Building Advice: Speak Up!

Karine shared her advice to those looking to switch career paths: “Speak up. When you're surrounded by a team that genuinely wants to see you grow, you'll be amazed by just how supportive they can be”.

Troy Parish, Engineering Operations Administrator

Some people are naturally good at it, while others need to work harder to achieve the grandiose title of Manager. Regardless of the path, there’s a lot to learn from becoming a leader. 

Troy Parish has had a fascination with technology for as long as he can remember. Prior to joining Sharethrough in 2011, Troy was managing the IT function for a design consultancy company. He joined Sharethrough four years after the company's inception, jumping on board to work as an IT specialist… Which makes him one of Sharethrough’s longest standing employees, and reaping the rewards of both personal and professional development.

An Engineering Operations Administrator’s Story

After spending over a year in a more hands-on IT role, Troy journeyed into a managerial role as an IT & Workplace Infrastructure Manager. But Troy’s professional journey didn’t stop there. Filled with a new lust for learning and knowledge, Troy eventually went on to start a new journey into the engineering side of the business, where he now works as the Engineering Operations Administrator.

His new job involves “a number of new reports, and the inheritance of an entire realm of responsibility”. Troy’s aspirations for the future include: “Growing into my new role on the Engineering team. Looking like an idiot in a new scope of ways and places. Learning everything I can. Falling in love with my people all over again.”

Career-Building Advice: Always Ask Questions

Troy’s advice to someone looking to change career paths? Always, always, always ask questions, and don’t omit the self work. “Talk to everyone in the org. Ask dumb questions. Make good friends. Geek out with people about what they do and how it helps feed them as a person. Find an advocate in the role you're interested in moving to, and look to them for guidance and mentorship. Take the time to sound out if you have a draw to or passion for management. Learn as much as you can.” 

In a recent CNBC article, employee development was cited as one of the top reasons for retaining employees. At Sharethrough, we have always placed an emphasis on employee development, so it should come to no surprise to see employees such as Troy, Karine, and JB excel when given the opportunity to grow their skillsets.

About Calibrate—

Founded in 2015, Calibrate is a yearly conference for new engineering managers hosted by seasoned engineering managers. The experience level of the speakers ranges from newcomers all the way through senior engineering leaders with over twenty years of experience in the field. Each speaker is greatly concerned about the craft of engineering management. Organized and hosted by Sharethrough, it was conducted yearly in September, from 2015-2019 in San Francisco, California.
