How Sharethrough Supports Employees Mental & Physical Health
There is such a thing as a working environment that recognizes the importance of your physical and mental health. After two years of adapting to the changing reality of a global pandemic, enterprises have seen a rise in stress within their workforce and it is their responsibility to offer an environment that is cognizant and supportive of their employees' needs.
Working is and will always be a part of people’s life. Workplaces can play a huge role in maintaining and improving the mental health of their people. As we strive to create a healthy environment, let’s dive into what makes Sharethrough an award-winning, great place to work as we continuously work to provide all our employees with the support and tools they need to maintain and improve their mental health, physical health, and overall well being.
Supporting our Employees’ Mental & Physical Health
One thing everyone wants to know before starting a new job is what the health benefits are. It is crucial to know that if something happens, you will have the tools and support necessary to help you get through it.
This is why we provide all our employees with an extended healthcare coverage plan. Sharethrough pays 100% of the individual premium, and 80% of the dependent premium. We know that to take care of our people, we must also take care of their loved ones, hence why we offer generous coverage. You shouldn’t have to pay the big bucks for feeling secure.
Access to Extended Health Resources
In addition to the extended health benefits, designed to help with challenges they may face in their everyday lives, our US employees have access to the Employee Assistance Program, a confidential support and referral program, as well as access to group therapy sessions.
Additionally, our Canadian employees and their families have unlimited access to Dialogue, a virtual health platform providing access to doctors, nurses, and other clinicians.
Wellness Reimbursement Program
Our commitment to our people’s wellbeing doesn’t stop at insurance coverage. We’ve also introduced a Wellness Reimbursement Program which covers any activity that relates to your wellbeing, whether it be tied to mental or physical wellness. Be it a hobby, exercise equipment, or access to services, the Wellness Reimbursement Program gives employees $840 to spend yearly on anything that will help boost their happiness.
Caring Days
In order to really be aware and to answer our people’s needs, we’ve introduced Officevibe Pulse Surveys, an anonymous and safe space where people can share their thoughts, feelings, and suggestions.
It helps us understand the real needs of our people and provide them with the best tools and resources to support their mental and physical health, as well as overall wellbeing at work. For example, we noticed a trend where employees weren’t using their vacation days from the stress of the pandemic. To promote employees taking the time off they need, we implemented “Care Days” – 3 days annually for employees to use at their discretion outside of our regular vacation policy.
Promoting Healthy Habits
Because life doesn’t stop when we’re at work, we implemented some company-wide initiatives that help meet the real needs of our people, like flexible hours that adapt to your individual reality. If you need to make an appointment, drop kids off at school, run a quick errand, or simply start earlier or later in their day, our people have the freedom to choose a schedule that works for them.
Over two years of zoom calls later, many of us are experiencing “Zoom Fatigue”. Sometimes we just need a day free from Zoom calls, which is why we introduced “No Zoom Thursdays”. Thursday gives us all a break so we can work and focus without interruptions.
To top it off, every Tuesday morning at 07:30 EST we have an online Yoga class with certified instructor Eve Guilbert. If it’s too early in the morning for you, the session is recorded so you can go back and practice whenever you want!
Mental Health in the Current Context
The effects the pandemic has on our mental health affects our ability to do work. Some may be silently struggling, unaware of the symptoms. So we asked Liz Eustace, Wellness Facilitator from Dialogue, to help us understand how COVID-19 affects our mental health.
In a Sharethrough-wide conference, we learned how the pandemic affects our mental health and what self-care methods we can use to improve our wellbeing.
How COVID-19 Affects Mental Health
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone’s mental health to some capacity over the last two years. What are some of the signs? The effects on our mental health can manifest themselves in these common ways:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Irritability
- Decreased Productivity
But now that we know how it affects our mental health, what are some of the methods we can use to take care of ourselves?
How to Take Care of Your Mental Health During COVID-19
We learned many self-care methods during the conference on mental health in the context of COVID-19. Both from Liz Eustace, and from our own employees. Many of us shared some of our most effective strategies and coping mechanisms. These are some of the methods we learned that can really make a positive difference to our mental health.
1. Spending Time With Loved Ones
While it may be difficult to see many of our friends and family in person due to fluctuating restrictions and rising cases, there are still ways to safely spend time with loved ones. Many of us like to chat with our friends on the phone while doing chores or going for a walk. Online video games are another great way to spend time with friends and family in an engaging, interactive way. Be it puzzles, strategy games or role-playing adventure games, there’s a game for any skill level and interest!
2. Physical Exercise
Doing any kind of physical exercise helps to reduce stress, lower anxiety, and improve your overall mood. Whether it’s jogging, yoga, or lifting weights, we notice the effects of exercise has on our mental health almost immediately.
3. New Hobbies
Taking up new hobbies or working on our existing ones is a sure-fire way to help pass the time. And the gradual improvements we see in ourselves help to improve our confidence, lower our anxiety, and lift our moods! Many of us have taken up drawing, a new musical instrument, or baking as a hobby. Maybe there’s a hobby you’ve wanted to try for a while, but never had the chance?
A Great Place to Work
Supporting our employees’ mental health, physical health and wellbeing will always be one of our top priorities. By providing extended health benefits, additional wellness funds, extra caring days, promoting healthy habits and learning how to take care of our mental health in the context of the pandemic, we can help our employees be the best version of themselves.
