Sustainable practices in advertising have quickly become one of Sharethrough’s top priorities. In 2022 we launched GreenPMPs™, which was followed by the launch of our carbon emissions estimator, built to help brands raise awareness about the environmental impact of digital advertising campaigns. Additionally, on April 13, 2023, we hosted the first-ever Green Media Summit presented by Sharethrough in New York City.
Why Earth Week?
While it’s important for Sharethrough to continue to innovate and expand on ways that we can have a positive impact on the environment in advertising, we wanted to further extend this same mission to each and every one of our employees...
That’s why we decided to celebrate #EarthWeek - a full week dedicated to empowering our employees to become more eco-conscious and knowledgeable regarding sustainability. Earth Week took place April 16 to 21, and consisted of five days of engaging workshops, sustainability practices, presentations by guest speakers, and a day of volunteering to celebrate the earth, providing Sharethroughers with the tools and education to build a more sustainable future, both at work, and at home.
7 Steps Taken Towards Sustainable Living During Earth Week
1. Guest Speaker Presentations: Peter Brannen
The history of our planet Earth is an extensive and intricate one, yet there is tons of information that we can learn from it if we take the time to do so. As part of Earth Week, Peter Brannen, science writer at The Atlantic and author of The Ends of the World, gave a presentation on his book, which showcased how learning about the five times life on earth went extinct, which were mostly from C02 emissions, can help us predict and save the earth’s future. At the end of the session, Sharethroughers were given the opportunity to participate in a contest to receive a free copy of Peter’s book, providing a chance to further learn about this fascinating topic.
2. DIY Tips & Tricks
Opening up the floor to our own employees and giving them a voice to share their own unique home sustainability practices is a great way to spark collaboration and conversation regarding sustainability. One of our daily Earth week activities prompted Sharethroughers to share and learn sustainable tips and tricks from each other.
3. Workshops: Luc Marsolais Leading By Example
Luc Marsolais, Chief Operating Officer, hosted an interactive workshop on how to implement sustainable habits, which educated Sharethroughers on ways to reduce their carbon footprints at home, in the office, and on the road to contribute to a greener future. Sustainable habits could involve anything from changing your washing habits to drying your clothes outside, to using natural cleaners.
Our personal favorite was the section where Luc offered employees multiple ways to reuse toilet paper rolls, teaching us all that they could act as dividers for wireless chargers and other technological appliances, and even grow plants.
4. Exploring Eco-Friendly Recipes
It’s no secret that many Sharethroughers are excellent cooks and big foodies! It only made sense that we share the knowledge of our favorite vegetarian or vegan recipes. From delicious veggie tacos, to cauliflower “wings”, to delicious curries, Sharethroughers shared their crowd pleasers and personal favorites so that others could try them out.
5. Our Monthly All Hands, with a Vegan Twist
Our monthly all-hands meeting is a cornerstone of our company culture - a time for our entire team to come together and align on our goals, share new initiatives, and foster an open dialogue between all levels of the organization! This month, at our Montreal headquarters, we gathered our Montreal-based employees and treated them to a Vegan lunch catered by Omnivore to enjoy right before the meeting.
6. Building a Garden at our Montreal Office
The knowledge and inspiration gained throughout the week took root in a powerful way, as Sharethroughers in our Montreal office came together for a happy hour unlike any other. With a mission to empower our team members to embrace sustainability and healthy living, we organized a garden activity that sparked creativity, curiosity, and a newfound appreciation for the earth.
As our team members sifted through a selection of seeds ranging from herbs to veggies and fiery hot peppers, Sharethroughers set out to create their very own gardens - a tangible expression of their commitment to the environment!
7. Community, Collaboration & Neighbourhood Clean-up
After learning about countless sustainability tactics, and engaging in meaningful challenges and activities, we ended off Earth week at Sharethrough in the most meaningful way possible, by actively contributing to creating a cleaner planet through picking up trash, litter, and garbage around the streets. Sharethrough employees were given a volunteer day to make the most of Earth Week, getting their hands dirty and making a real impact! Way to go everyone!
Montreal: Partnering Up With Ubisoft
Montreal partnered up with Ubisoft, our community neighbour in Mile End, near Sharethrough company headquarters. Employees got together during the afternoon of Friday, April 21, to clean up the parks around the community. We rolled up our sleeves and got to work, donning gloves and grabbing bags to tackle the unsightly trash that had accumulated during the winter months. Our joint effort not only transformed the parks, but also served as a reminder of the positive impact that can be made through collaboration and a shared sense of purpose.
Toronto: Cleaning up the Downtown Area
Our Toronto Squad met up to #CleanTorontoTogether as part of a city-wide initiative.
Ari Belliu, Marketing communications specialist at Sharethrough describes the experience: “As a team, we ventured to several parks as we walked a big loop around the downtown area. Everyone was enthusiastic and smiling the entire time. It was all we could talk about until it was time to clean. We had so much fun that we cleaned for several hours past the 20-minute makeover. What surprised us most was how many cigarette butts are littered everywhere. We could probably fill just as many bags as we did with garbage and recycling. At the end of the day, we felt a stronger bond between each other and the city and we can’t wait to do this again next year!”
Austin: Uniting with Rowing Dock To Take Care of Business
Our Austin employees joined local company Rowing Dock to partner up with the Trail Conservancy organization to celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up our trails and lake.
Balbina Santana, Software Engineer at Sharethrough describes the experience: “As a team we had a fun time volunteering rowing on a canoe to catch the trash that gets tossed to our beautiful Lake Austin! In order to make it more interesting and fun there were contests to see which team caught the weirdest item and the heaviest trash bag, safe to say the guys next to us won picking out a road sign, heavy and weird! It was a very eye-opening experience to see that very small trash ends up in our lake system, which is sad because apart from the lake-life we don’t see, we saw many fish and turtles going around these pieces of trash. We’re excited and looking forward to participating in this activity every year!”
The day was a great success as the organization picked up over 8000 lbs of garbage from Lake Austin!
At Sharethrough we believe that sustainability isn't just a buzzword - it's a responsibility. We're committed to taking meaningful action to reduce our environmental impact and create a more sustainable future. And we hope that our Earth Week initiative will inspire other companies to do the same. Together, we can make a difference and create a better world for future generations.
